My path to motherhood was not straightforward. At 32, I was faced with undiagnosed infertility that led me into a long and often overwhelming chapter of testing and trying. Over the course of six years, I went through endless testing, fertility medications, and seven fertility procedures, riding the rollercoaster of hope, disappointment, and perseverance. In June 2022, at 38 years old, I finally became pregnant and I welcomed my healthy son into the world in Jan 2023. A moment that brought not only joy but also deep reflection on the resilience of the mind and body.
This experience shaped me both personally and professionally. It gave me unique insight into the fears and frustrations women face when pregnancy comes later than expected, or when the journey is filled with hurdles. It also reinforced for me how profoundly supportive yoga can be — physically, mentally, and emotionally — at every stage of this journey.
I am not alone in this journey. More and more women are starting or expanding their families later in life. Whether it’s after focusing on career, personal growth, a long infertility journey, or simply waiting for the right moment, pregnancy at an older age can feel both empowering and intimidating. Many women notice the whispers of comparison “I feel so much older than the other pregnant women around me.” That’s a real and valid experience.
As someone who has guided women through pregnancy for over 20 years as a prenatal yoga teacher, I’ve seen how powerful the practice can be — not only for supporting the physical changes of pregnancy but also for nurturing resilience, calm, and confidence at any age.
Gentle, prenatal-safe yoga movements help keep the spine, hips, and pelvic floor flexible and strong. This reduces aches and supports posture as the body changes. This is crucial for women who may already feel the effects of aging joints or muscles.
Through breath-work and meditation, yoga helps quiet the inner critic and soften comparison with younger mothers. The practice fosters a mindset of acceptance and trust in your body’s wisdom.
Fatigue can be more noticeable later in life, but restorative yoga and relaxation practices recharge both body and mind, creating space for joy instead of overwhelm.
Yoga teaches tools for navigating uncertainty — whether it’s medical testing, fertility treatments, or simply the unknowns of late pregnancy. These techniques provide calm and empowerment, rather than fear.
